Shah Deniz II 96" ILT

Mid-January 2015 saw LM Handling provide lifting and handing expertise and equipment to the Shah Deniz II project; a BP operated site located in the Caspian Sea, roughly 70km off the coast of Azerbaijan. The new development forms part of already operating installations in one of the world’s largest gas-condensate deposits.

Working for Saipem Ltd., LM Handling provided an Internal Lifting Tool (ILT) for the purpose of lifting and handling the 96” followers used in the project. Altogether, the ILT was offshore for approximately 60 days, whilst aiding the installation of 8 pin piles at the site. Along with the ILT itself, LM Handling also supplied the necessary hydraulic power unit with hose reel, and all relevant tools and spares. A full team of expert personnel from LM Handling accompanied the equipment to ensure its safe, accurate, and efficient use throughout the project.

At 96”, the ILT required for Shah Deniz II was unusually large and, as such, beyond the capabilities of LM Handling’s rental fleet at the time of tender. Therefore, it was necessary to upgrade the standard 48”-84” ILT to accommodate the considerably larger diameter needed. Despite only being awarded the contract in early October 2014, LM Handling were able to design, build, and test the upgraded ILT in time to reach the required mobilisation date of mid-January 2015. LM Handling’s ability to deliver this service, within the time frame required, meant there was no delay to the project, and contributed to several project milestones being reached ahead of schedule.

For the Shah Deniz II project, LM Handling were able to use their expertise in lifting and handling to tailor equipment to the unique needs of the client, providing a bespoke and professional service throughout the project.
